How Will Auto Industry Bankruptcies Move Markets?

There has been news lately that GM and Chrystler are moving toward bankruptcy. I've been surprised that the markets have gone down on this news.

Is this because the markets already expected the big auto companies to go bankrupt?

Will the markets wait for the actual bankruptcy fillings to react in a negative way?

Well, we heard the announcement today that Chrystler will be going through a bankruptcy. The markets had been up nearly 200 points before the news and finished down about 17 points. So there was a drop from the day's high, but overall, this was not a big drop as some expected from the bankruptcy announcement of a major American car company. Maybe this was expected and already priced into the market?
