I wrote a long time ago about how I was trying to decide what I should invest in. My basic choices were investing in the stock market, in real estate, or in building my own business.
I don't really like real estate so I decided not to invest in real estate even though I once worked in the industry and had a lot of friends who were investing in real estate.
As the housing bubble has burst, I'm glad I didn't do something I wasn't interested in just to make some money. A few of my firends now own properties that are worth less than the money they owe. Many of them have had good luck keeping renters in the properties so I think they are doing ok, but the real estate investment isn't providing a surge in value as real estate has done in the past.
The second option open to me was to invest in the stock market. While I have been investing in the stock market on a yearly basis, I decided not to become an active trader. This appears to be a good move as the stock market has tanked. I am now buying more stock while the market is low, but I do it in a passive way by buying low cost funds that are managed by someone else.
My third option was to start my own business. This is the option I selected. I have built an online business that now has numerous online properties that are continuing to grow. I have been learning many things about doing business online. My skills and the online market continues to grow.
I have not had huge successes in my online businesses. The internet still has a lot of room to grow. Many newspapers have just as many people reading their online version as their print version, but make 90% of their revenue from their print versions. This should change as advertisers learn how to spend money and reach audiences through online advertising.
So, I see the past ten years being spent on the right investment. I feel I am set up to see some success in the near future as the internet and my sites continue to grow. Most importantly, I really have been enjoying what I do online. I love trying to figure out how to make money online and I plan to continue doing it for a long time.
